What is a Sump Pump?

A sump pump is a naturally constructed pit that is installed at the lowest part of your home. Its purpose is to collect and remove all the water that passes through your foundation walls.

How Does a Sump Pump Collect Water?

A sump pump is connected to two sets of pipes. The first pipe is called weeping tile, and it sits at the footing of the home (The base of your foundation walls). Weeping tile collects water through small perforation and directs it to the sump pump. The sump pump then stores that water and uses a second pipe to push it outside of your home.

Once the seeping water is a safe distance away from your home's foundation it is removed via a storm drain, dry well, drainage ditch, or a low-lying area of the property.

How Do I Know if my Sump Pump is Broken?

Key signs of a broken sump pump are:

  • A Musty or Damp Smell in your Basement

  • Visible Mold or a Mold Smell

  • A Stuck Float Switch (Inside your sump pump basin)

  • A Loud Sump Pump or Loud Sump Pump Noises

  • Your Sump Pump is Not Running

Remember: Sump Pumps are connected to pipes that run outside of your home. Toronto's cold weather CAN freeze external pipes. A frozen external pipe can cause major damage to your sump pump and waterproofing system.

It is very important to consistently check your sump pump throughout the winter.

Sump Pump Battery Backups

Sump pumps are a great tool used to keep water out of a basement. The purpose of a sump pump is to collect and force seeping water out of your home. By installing a sump pump you increase the opportunity of maintaining a dry basement.

That being said, sump pumps are only beneficial when they are working, which is why Nusite Contractors Ltd. offers battery backup systems.

Installing a battery backup system for your sump pump provides a second layer of protection in case of a power outage.

Nusite Contractors Ltd. can install a battery back up system during the initial sump pump installation process or at a later date.

Many homeowners overlook the battery backup system due to the initial increase in cost. However, a battery back upsystem for your sump pump is always a good idea as it will reduce the chances of expensive water damage issues in the future
