Quick Tips for Winterizing your Toronto Home!

With Toronto's inconsistent winter weather it is important for homeowners to spend an afternoon going through their property to ensure it is ready for the snow and cold.

As a waterproofing company in Toronto, we see a variety of basement leaks caused by the improper maintenance of a home's exterior. One of the most important steps you can take to avoid basement leaks over the winter is to examine and clean your gutters on a clear and sunny day.

Some of the things you should check for:

• Fall leaves have been removed so they won’t clog your downspouts.

If water and ice start to accumulate due to a clogged downspout, you increase the risk of water leaking over the top or through cracks of your gutter. That water will accumulate around the perimeter of your home, creating an opportunity for a foundation leak.

Due to Toronto's current weather inconsistencies, accumulated water will start to make its way through your basement’s foundation cracks, causing issues in your home.

• Make sure your downspouts are directed away from your home.

Make sure that your downspout extensions are directed far enough away from your home so water doesn’t start to accumulate in the soil around your foundation.

• Fill the holes and puddles surrounding your foundation walls.

Settling water is the main cause of basement leaks. Even if you have a waterproofed basement, we recommend filling and sloping the surrounding grade away from your home. This will give you an extra layer of protection, reducing the chances of future foundation issues.

• Clean your window wells

Similar to downspouts; window wells should be cleared of debris (leaves and dirt). Many homeowners are unaware of the weeping tile (perforated pipe) at the bottom of a properly installed window well. The purpose of the weeping tile is to collect the water that flows through the 3/4 clear gravel and direct it away from the home. A clogged/ filled window well will stop the water from flowing through the gravel, which will increase the chances of water leaking through the foundation wall surrounding your window(s).
